A guy just asked me to answer some questions on his website whohub.com.
So here’s a copy of the interview :

Whohub : What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
Yarks : Well, I’m creating things. I’m painting, writing and drawing. But that doesn’t make an artist of me, does it? I think it is more about how I see things around me and how I digest and synthesize them to create something I want to share.

Whohub : Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
Yarks :
Yes, I do. I’ve got a website where I put some of my works : http://www.yarks.com.au

Whohub : How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
Yarks : There is a lot of artists out there saying nature is the mother of inspiration … Hmm, I don’t know… I’m not really into mother nature. I should probably sleep near a bunch of flowers more often. It will eventually make me want to paint some. Usually my inspiration comes from a curly lock of hair on a naked shoulder … a glimpse of a bra under a light and transparent dress… a shy smile of a waitress or the innocent eyes of a lost femme fatale…

Whohub : What role does technology play in your creative process?
Yarks : I’m thinking about buying an ipad to sketch people.

Whohub : What is art?
Yarks : It’s the kind of question without answer. It’s exactly like “what is Death?”. A lot of people tried to answer without any success. There are some theories but no definitive definition. And it’s a huge mistake to ask an artist about it. Like the dead guy in a morgue, he will not give you any clue about death.

Whohub : When do you get your best ideas?
Yarks : 3:30 am. Drunk. After sex.

Whohub : How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
Yarks : I don’t. People do it for me.

Whohub : Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
Yarks : - The Origin of the World (Gustave Courbet)
- Young Virgin Auto-Sodomized by Her Own Chastity (Salvador Dali)
- Naples (Ernest Pignon-Ernest)

Whohub : When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
Yarks : The first time someone asked me to paint her and wanted to pay me for it.

Whohub : Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
Yarks : I don’t know. They probably think you have to be weird to be an artist. I don’t. Or maybe I do but I’m not aware of it.

Whohub : Do you consider yourself postmodern?
Yarks : Whatever. Postmodern means nothing. It’s the kind of thing that can be important for an historian or an art student in 2083 but not for a living artist. I’m a contemporary artist (with a lowercase “c” please).

Whohub : Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
Yarks : It’s a myth.

Whohub : Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
Yarks : If I have to choose one, it will be Amadeo Modigliani. The reasons are obvious.

Whohub : Is art necessary?
Yarks : For some it is, for others it’s not. The only thing I know is Jackson Pollock’s No.5 have been sold $150,000,000. The guy who bought it probably have the answer of your question.

Whohub : Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold?
Yarks : Not really. There is some of my work I can’t even imagine selling for some reason. I just keep them when it’s too hard I guess.

Whohub : In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
Yarks : I don’t know. There is no guide for Life either. How do you know what the next step is?

Whohub : How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased?
Yarks : It’s a museum. Do you really expect to see a dinosaur alive when you are going to a museum of natural history? If you want to see something alive, go to a zoo… oh sorry, I mean a gallery.

Whohub : Do you personally collect any items?
Yarks : I’ve got a collection of weird stuff like a green mannequin with a tie and black wings, a green garden gnome, an empty stolen wallet… uh… yes, green as well :p

Whohub : Which websites do you frequently visit?
Yarks : mine, everyday …

Whohub : What advice would you give to those just beginning?
Yarks : “Are you sure you don’t want to be an accountant?”
